CUT research team achieves international distinction for creating surgical site infection education system

A research paper published by the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) was awarded the Best Student Paper Award at the 22nd International Conference on Artificial Intelligence Applications and Innovations.

The research paper is entitled Interactive Retrieval-Governed LLM Tutoring for Surgical Site Infection Prevention Education.

The CUT team’s goal was to develop a prototype artificial intelligence (AI) tool that supports, in a safe and scientifically documented manner, the education of nurses in the prevention of surgical site infections.

The research team, comprising members from the Department of Nursing and the Department of Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Informatics at CUT, created SurgiNurse AI, an interactive educational environment designed to facilitate learning on the prevention of surgical site infections.

The platform uses large language models (LLMs) and information retrieval technologies to ensure that the answers and educational material provided are based on selected and verified scientific sources. It can also generate explanations, educational cards, and multiple-choice questions, offering a more interactive and personalised learning experience.

“This distinction highlights the power of collaboration across different scientific fields. It also confirms that when clinical knowledge, educational experience and technological innovation come together around a common goal, solutions with substantial value for education- and, more broadly, for the quality of healthcare- can be created,” a press release concluded.
