Europe continues to be one of the world’s most powerful and attractive destinations in 2026, as travellers increasingly seek experiences that combine culture, gastronomy, and personalised itineraries.
According to a new analysis by the Mastercard Economics Institute, travel trends are taking shape amid economic uncertainty and geopolitical challenges, yet demand for European destinations remains strong and stable.
The study shows that Europe is not merely functioning as a tourist destination but as a global benchmark for experiential travel, with visitors placing greater emphasis on “travel as an experience” rather than just the final destination. At the same time, demand is shifting toward more conscious choices, with travellers placing higher value on cost, quality, and the overall value of their trip.
Europe remains the global hub for cultural and gastronomic tourism. According to the data, six of the top ten global destinations are in Europe, with cities like Paris recording strong growth momentum. The analysis also shows that the continent maintains consistently high demand, despite challenges in the international economic environment.
Major cities retain their momentum. They continue to attract significant visitor volumes, with different spending patterns by nationality. Travellers from different countries focus on experiences such as gastronomy, shopping, and cultural activities, highlighting the diversification of the European travel experience. Cities such as Amsterdam, Barcelona, Madrid, and Frankfurt are also recording strong increases in international arrivals.
Affordability remains a key factor. Price and economic balance continue to decisively influence travel choices. Rising costs for transport and accommodation are leading travellers to make more careful and selective decisions, with greater emphasis on the value each destination offers. At the same time, exchange-rate fluctuations and the income environment are affecting the frequency and duration of trips.
