Commissioner of Communications, Marios Pieris, has held a working meeting with Chief Scientist for Research, Innovation and Technology of the Republic of Cyprus, Demetris Skourides, to strengthen cooperation in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, cybersecurity and digital resilience.
According to a press release by the Commissioner of Communications Office, the meeting took place in a highly constructive atmosphere, during which both sides exchanged views on establishing a strategic framework for cooperation to support the secure, responsible and innovative adoption of Artificial Intelligence for the benefit of society, the economy and the public sector.
Discussions focused on practical areas of cooperation, including support for the implementation of the European Union AI Act, the development of an AI Act Implementation Playbook, the organization of joint technical meetings and roundtables with ISO/IEC experts on AI governance and international standards, and initiatives designed to future-proof Cyprus in the fields of Artificial Intelligence and cybersecurity.
Pieris highlighted that cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence are closely interconnected pillars of the country’s digital transformation and stressed that close cooperation among all competent stakeholders is essential for building a secure, resilient and trusted digital ecosystem.
On his part, Skourides stressed the importance of bringing together research, innovation, government and industry to unlock the full potential of Artificial Intelligence, strengthen Cyprus’ competitiveness, productivity and sustainable growth, while ensuring alignment with European values, transparency and internationally recognized governance standards.
Both sides agreed to maintain an open and structured dialogue through regular working meetings, with the shared objective of advancing innovation, strengthening digital resilience and promoting the safe and trustworthy use of Artificial Intelligence in Cyprus, the press release concludes.
