House President urges diaspora students to be Cyprus' 'ambassadors' abroad

House of Representatives President Annita Demetriou urged Cypriot diaspora students from the United States, Canada and Australia to act as "ambassadors" for Cyprus in their countries of residence, pointing out the importance of maintaining strong ties with the island's history, culture and heritage.

The students visited the House of Representatives as part of an established programme organised by the Service for Overseas and Repatriated Cypriots of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to a House statement.

Welcoming the students, Demetriou said strengthening ties with Cypriots abroad has long been a priority for the House, noting that such exchanges provide valuable opportunities for dialogue on issues affecting younger generations of the diaspora.

During the meeting, Demetriou also briefed the students on the Cyprus issue, stressing that the primary objective remains the reunification of the island through a comprehensive and viable settlement based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, in line with relevant United Nations resolutions.

Referring to the war in Ukraine, she said the violations of sovereignty and territorial integrity experienced by Ukrainians today mirror the experiences of Cypriots as a result of the continuing Turkish occupation. Cyprus, she added, consistently defends international law and human rights in all cases and promotes dialogue and cooperation as essential tools for safeguarding global peace, stability and prosperity.

Demetriou also informed the students about the role and functions of the House of Representatives, as well as key government bills and legislative proposals currently under consideration, noting that they have a direct impact on citizens' daily lives, particularly those of young people.
