The most important thing is to ensure the implementation of the agreement between the United States and Iran, President Nikos Christodoulides has said, adding that Lebanon's President requested Nicosia’s assistance in helping to ensure that the agreed provisions are carried out.
Asked by a journalist, upon arriving at the 15 June graduation ceremony for doctoral students at the Cyprus University of Technology, to comment on the US-Iran agreement, President Christodoulides said that it was a development he welcomes. “We welcome it also in our capacity as the country holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union,” he added.
He noted that, on his way to Limassol for the ceremony, he had a telephone conversation with the President of Lebanon noting that “an important aspect of the agreement concerns Lebanon and the actions of both Iran and Israel in relation to Lebanon.” “This is an important issue and one on which we must focus”, he added.
He said that EU leaders would discuss the matter in Brussels on Thursday, particularly the need to ensure the implementation of what has been agreed upon.
“It is important that an agreement has been reached, and we welcome it. The most important thing, however, is to ensure the implementation of this agreement,” he added.
Asked whether President Aoun had expressed concerns that the provisions affecting Lebanon might not be respected, President Christodoulides said that Aoun had requested “the assistance of the Republic of Cyprus, both as the country holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union and as a neighbouring country that maintains dialogue with all parties involved, to do whatever we can, always within the limits of our capabilities, in order to help ensure the implementation of what has been agreed.”
