Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy Nicodemos Damianou is in Brussels to chair the EU's Competitiveness Council (COMPET) on Research and Space issues, on 29 May.
According to a press release, the focus of the discussions on Research issues will be the provisions of the legislative package for the new 'Horizon Europe' Framework Programme for Research and Innovation for 2028-2034.
The new package aims to ensure excellence and strengthen Europe's competitiveness, resilience and strategic autonomy. Council is expected to adopt the Recommendation on a European Union Framework for Science Diplomacy.
The Recommendation provides guidance for maximising the impact of science diplomacy actions, thereby contributing to the broader objective of strengthening the EU's geopolitical influence.
On Space issues, the focus of the discussions will be on the proposal for a Regulation on the security, resilience and sustainability of space activities in the EU (EU Space Act), which aims to create a single European framework for safe and sustainable space activities.
Ministers will also exchange views on the role of space in the EU's economic security and the contribution of space technologies to strengthening Europe's strategic autonomy and competitiveness.
In the margins of the Council, the Deputy Minister will hold bilateral contacts with his counterparts and officials of the European institutions.
