Christodoulides: Significant progress on Cyprus’ accession to Schengen

Cyprus is a stable, reliable and predictable partner, President Nikos Christodoulides said during a roundtable discussion organised by Invest Cyprus in Mumbai.

Addressing the event, President Christodoulides said, among other things, that Cyprus is a natural partner for India and a gateway to Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, noting that the island’s geographic location is one of its greatest strategic advantages.

He also expressed pride in the fact that the Cypriot economy is among the fastest-growing in the EU, while significantly reducing public debt.

The President further noted that foreign direct investment exceeds €81 billion, representing more than 225% of the country’s GDP, while international companies continue to choose Cyprus as the base for their regional headquarters.

Referring to Cyprus’ accession to the Schengen Area, President Christodoulides said that significant progress has been achieved and that a political decision is expected by late 2026 or early 2027, a milestone development for Cyprus, as he described it.

Speaking about the IMEC corridor, the President underlined that Cyprus has a very important role to play in its development, stressing that IMEC reflects the direction in which the global economy is moving, towards greater connectivity between regions.
