Presidents of Cyprus and Montenegro meeting in Nicosia

President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides will meet with Montenegro’s President, Jakov Milatović, on Monday morning, in Nicosia, and with whom he will hold discussions about  Podgorica's European perspective, as well as bilateral ties.

Following their tête-à-tête meeting, the two Presidents will hold extended talks with the participation of their respective delegations.

According to Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis, the visit comes only weeks after the establishment of a special working group tasked with the technical preparation of Montenegro’s Accession Treaty, which has already held its first meeting in Brussels.

“This development marks a decisive step in Montenegro’s accession process and constitutes a significant political success for the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, with a substantial impact on the EU enlargement agenda,” he said.

He added that the Cyprus Presidency had contributed decisively to securing a timely decision “of clear strategic importance”, paving the way for the next phase of the process and reinforcing efforts to revitalise the EU enlargement process in the Western Balkans.

According to the Government Spokesperson, the two Presidents are also expected to exchange views on developments in the Western Balkans and on the importance attached to “the stability and European course of the region”.

On the bilateral front, Letymbiotis said, the visit represents “an important opportunity” to further strengthen relations between Cyprus and Montenegro.

Discussions will also focus on prospects for deepening economic cooperation, particularly in trade and investment, shipping, sustainable tourism and the organisation of business forums.

“The visit of the President of Montenegro confirms the positive momentum in bilateral relations, as well as our country’s active role in the European enlargement agenda,” Letymbiotis noted.
