“Historic moment” for Cyprus as Christodoulides addresses Greek Parliament, Presidency says

The Presidency of the Republic of Cyprus has described President Nikos Christodoulides’ address before the plenary session of the Greek Parliament as a “historic moment” for the Republic of Cyprus, highlighting the deeply institutional and strategic nature of relations between Cyprus and Greece.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Presidency said that “the presence of the President of the Republic at the podium of the Hellenic Parliament once again highlights, in the most official manner, the depth of relations between Cyprus and Greece, the steady national alignment and the shared sense of responsibility in addressing the challenges facing Hellenism, the region and Europe.”

According to the Presidency, the last time a President of the Republic of Cyprus addressed the Greek Parliament was in 2010, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus.

The statement also noted that, at a time when Cyprus is strengthening its European and regional role, President Christodoulides’ address to the Greek Parliament sends a strong message of unity, continuity and common direction.

The Presidency further stressed that “this is a historic moment for the Republic of Cyprus. A moment that confirms that the relationship between Cyprus and Greece remains deeply institutional and strategic and that Hellenism moves forward with a sense of history, responsibility and perspective.”

President Christodoulides is expected to return to Cyprus on Thursday evening.
