Nikos Christodoulides: Cyprus shipping has never been stronger, and its ambition has never been greater

At the 37th Annual General Meeting of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber, President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides praised the country’s shipping sector, describing it as a pillar of stability, resilience and international credibility.

The President said he was present “to pay tribute to a sector which leads with confidence, carrying a vision,” during his address on Wednesday, while expressing the government’s appreciation for the trust shown by the shipping industry in Cyprus.

He noted that Cyprus has chosen “not only to adapt, but to achieve,” pointing to the continued growth of the island’s shipping registry, which he said had expanded by 23 per cent since September 2023, reaching its highest level in the last 25 years. He added that the Cyprus flag today stands for stability, reaffirming the country’s reputation as a reliable and forward-looking global shipping centre.

Referring to the wider maritime sector, the President stressed that shipping in Cyprus is thriving, supported by “efforts to enhance competitiveness, promote maritime skills, and strengthen the industry's resilience in an increasingly challenging international environment.”

Highlighting innovation as a key priority, Nikos Christodoulides underlined the importance of developing a conducive framework that creates opportunities for new Cypriot companies and generates quality employment prospects for local graduates entering the sector.

The President also referred to Cyprus’ growing international presence, noting the country’s strengthened role within the international maritime community. In particular, he highlighted Cyprus’ position within the International Maritime Organization Legal Committee, describing it as a milestone that reinforces the island’s participation in global decision-making on shipping matters.

He added that Cyprus is actively involved in shaping international maritime policy alongside major shipping nations such as United Kingdom and Greece, emphasising the country’s role in ongoing global discussions concerning the future of the sector.

Looking inward, the President said the government remains committed to strengthening institutions and modernising public administration in support of the shipping industry. He described the vision as one focused on creating a modern, agile and service-oriented maritime administration while encouraging greener and more responsible shipping practices.

“They carry a simple message: Cyprus respects and protects the seas,” he said.

Touching upon social developments within the industry, Nikos Christodoulides also highlighted initiatives promoting gender equality, scholarships for Cypriot women and the creation of a more modern and diverse maritime workforce. He stressed that maintaining a competitive market remains essential for the island’s long-term success.

“Cyprus shipping has never been stronger, and ambition has never been greater,” the President said, concluding that the government is committed to creating an environment in which both Cyprus and its shipping sector can continue to evolve and prosper.
