The US Ambassador, Julie S. Davis, praised the growth of her country’s partnership with Cyprus in a farewell meeting on Monday with the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, ahead of the end of her term in Cyprus. The meeting took place at the Presidential Palace, in Nicosia.
During the meeting, Davis, who is also Ambassador in Ukraine, told President Christodoulides that she will travel to Ukraine, where she will remain until the end of June.
In statements to journalists after the meeting, Davis said that she thanked President Christodoulides "for the incredible partnership over the course not just of my tenure, not just the tenure of any one ambassador, but really the growth in the relationship between the United States of America and Cyprus."
She noted that "it's been a remarkable couple of years in terms of what we have gotten done together for the people of the United States and the people of Cyprus" adding that "there's so much more to do and look forward to."
Davis pointed out that "none of this depends on a single person" noting that "there are remarkable teams on both sides of this relationship that are going to keep this moving forward." She also said that she looked forward to seeing what comes next.
Referring to bilateral relations, the US Ambassador said that these things don't happen because of one person, but because of teams of people, citing the diplomats at the American Embassy, the leadership of President Trump, and Secretary Rubio in Washington, as well as the leadership in Cyprus.
"There's so much we have done to protect our citizens" Davis pointed out, noting that "given the course of events over recent years, what we've done together in the realm of security affairs has been particularly important."
She further added that "bringing together Americans and Cypriots so that we understand each other better, I think is absolutely one of the areas that I'm particularly proud of."
"Bringing our business communities together to the benefit of both of our nations and finding success, American businesses finding success in Cyprus, Cypriot companies expanding into the United States, it's all very exciting" the US Ambassador said, adding that she has been "really honoured to be here and to play a part in this."
Speaking of her successor, John Breslow, Julie Davis said that "he is fantastic and is awaiting a vote from the United States Senate" adding that "he is looking forward to being here, and he is going to be a fantastic partner for Cyprus."
