A unique opportunity for young women in Cyprus to experience diplomacy first-hand is being offered through the initiative 'Woman Ambassador for a Day', implemented by female‑led embassies serving in Cyprus.
The initiative forms part of a broader European and international effort to strengthen women’s participation in diplomacy, aiming to empower women in leadership roles and enhance their representation in shaping foreign policy, a relevant press release states.
The initiative
The 'Diplomat for a Day' initiative, implemented in several European countries in recent years, aims to inspire and encourage young women to pursue careers in diplomacy and international relations.
In Cyprus, the initiative is carried out through the collaboration of embassies led by female ambassadors from European and non‑European countries and forms part of joint activities marking the International Day of Women in Diplomacy, fostering dialogue on gender equality and women’s participation in global affairs.
During last year’s edition, participants had the opportunity to accompany female ambassadors in official meetings, gain insight into the work of diplomatic missions, and engage in discussions on key international issues, gaining valuable experience and professional exposure, the press release notes.

Ambassador's statement
Commenting on the initiative, the Ambassador of Hungary in Nicosia, Dr. Krisztina Lakos, stated, “Today’s diplomacy needs the voice, perspective and leadership of women more than ever. Through this initiative, we are not simply offering an experience — we are creating role models, opening pathways, and empowering a new generation to actively shape our world. Equal participation of women is not an option; it is a necessity for sustainable and effective international policy.”
International context – 2026
The year 2026 marks a milestone for women’s diplomatic networks, with a strong focus on:
- Strengthening women’s representation
- Gender-responsive mediation
- Climate leadership
Key initiatives include:
- The WEDIN EU Network, supporting women diplomats across EU institutions
- The Western Balkans Network of Women Diplomats
- The Global Women in Water Diplomacy Network, promoting women’s leadership in water governance
At the same time, international events such as the International Women’s Summit 2026 in New York, along with UN-related initiatives, are reinforcing discussions on women’s role in global policymaking.

A step towards the future
"The 'Woman Ambassador for a Day' initiative is not merely symbolic, but part of a broader strategy aimed at moving from representation to meaningful participation and leadership of women in international affairs.
For young women in Cyprus, it offers a unique opportunity to gain first-hand insight into diplomacy and take a decisive step toward a dynamic professional future," the press release concludes.
