Law Office to host informal meeting within Cyprus EU Presidency framework

The Law Office of the Republic will be hosting an Informal Meeting of the Coordination Committee in the area of Police and Judicial Cooperation in Criminal Matters (CATS) on 14 and 15 April, in the coastal town of Larnaca, in the framework of Cyprus EU Presidency.

A press release says that this is a high-level meeting in which horizontal issues of criminal law and judicial cooperation in criminal matters will be discussed, with the aim of strengthening dialogue and coordination between EU Member States on issues of common interest in the field of criminal justice.

The meeting will be attended by representatives from the Member States, as well as representatives of the General Secretariat of the Council of the EU, the European Commission, the Committee of the Regions and organizations active in the field of criminal justice, such as Eurojust and Europol.

The work programme will focus on key issues of judicial cooperation in criminal matters, with an emphasis on the cross-border dimension and effective coordination of competent bodies.

Participants will exchange views on tackling cyberbullying, in particular with regard to the protection of children, the fight against the illicit trafficking of cultural goods, as well as the role, interaction and cooperation of organisations active in the field of justice, in particular Eurojust and Europol.

The opening of the proceedings will be addressed by Deputy Attorney General Savvas A. Angelides.

CATS convenes once every six months in Brussels and once, in the form of an informal meeting, in the country holding the Presidency of the Council of the EU, currently being Cyprus.
