Cyprus project presents innovative solutions for Europe's energy transition

The OMRES project, funded by the European Clean Energy Transition Partnership (CETP) through the island's Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF), leads Europe's push toward zero-emission energy by integrating renewable sources into existing grids, it was announced on Tuesday.

Centered on hybrid renewable energy systems (RES) paired with storage, OMRES develops digital tools to boost RES performance, reliability, and efficiency. In its first year, partners defined specs for the OMRES platform, incorporating project tools and a digital twin of a Cyprus-based hybrid system, while prototypes emerged for advanced design, operation, and fault diagnosis in these systems.

Key innovations include a data-driven atmospheric modeling system accounting for wind turbine wake effects, enhancing wind energy forecasts even in complex terrains, a sizing tool for solar panels and batteries that tackles production and demand uncertainties for flexible hybrid designs.

In addition, innovations include a monitoring framework for power converters enabling predictive maintenance and longer equipment life, and a high-fidelity digital twin for real-time validation, optimization, and control of hybrid RES. These advances already optimise RES design under uncertainty, improve forecasting, and enable smarter operations for extended component lifespans.
