The Deputy Minister of Migration and International Protection, Nicholas A. Ioannides, is in Brussels to participate in the first political trilogue on the proposed regulation on the return of third-country nationals who do not have a legal right to stay in the territory of the European Union (EU).
The Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection and the Secretariat of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU 2026 said in a press release that the proposed Regulation aims to increase returns and, consequently, address the abuse of the EU asylum system.
The trilogue is scheduled for Thursday, 26 March, immediately after the vote on the European Parliament’s common position. The trilogue procedure provides for informal tripartite negotiations between the European Parliament, the Council of the EU and the European Commission, with the aim of reaching an agreement on the legislative text.
On the part of the Council of the EU, the Republic of Cyprus is participating in the relevant negotiations as the current Chair of the Council of the EU.
The Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection is closely monitoring developments and is actively participating, within the framework of its competences and responsibilities deriving from the exercise of the Presidency of the Council of the EU by the Republic of Cyprus, in the procedures relating to the formation of a strong and effective legal tool that is expected to substantially strengthen the single European framework for returns, the press release said.
The Deputy Minister will return to Cyprus on Thursday evening.
