Medicover Genetics, Cyprus, is organising the fourth Pancyprian Essay Competition for World DNA Day, inviting high school students (16–19 years old) from public and private schools to participate.
Supported by the Biology Inspectorate of the Ministry of Education, Sport, and Youth of Cyprus, this initiative offers students the opportunity to explore the significance of DNA and its impact on science and society. The competition, held in celebration of World DNA Day on April 25, will award prizes to the first and second-best entries.
The topic of this year’s essay is: “Advances in Genetics Have Transformed Prenatal Care: Why Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) Matters in Low- and High-Risk Pregnancies?” The competition aims to raise awareness about the importance of DNA and its role in prenatal medicine, with particular focus on Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) and its contribution to modern prenatal care.
Participants are invited to prepare a blog-style essay describing the role of NIPT and how this method has influenced prenatal screening and clinical practice. Participants are encouraged to include examples of genetic conditions that can be detected through NIPT and to describe how early detection supports informed decision-making, enhances clinical management, and contributes to appropriate pregnancy care. They may also discuss how NIPT complements conventional prenatal screening methods and its relevance in both low- and high-risk pregnancies.
Participation Guidelines
Participants should submit a blog-style essay of 650–700 words (excluding references) in Greek or English, written for the general public and avoiding complex scientific terminology. The use of images or infographics is encouraged. Entries should be submitted in PDF format, include the student’s full name and school, and be sent through the students’ Biology teachers to scientificcommunications-cy@medicover.com. Each essay must be written by only one student. A confirmation email will be sent upon receipt. The submission deadline is April 16, 2026. The relevant competition circular has also been published on the website of the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth.
Awards
Medicover Genetics will award the following prizes:
- First place: €200
- Second place: €100
In addition, the ten best entries, together with their teachers, will have the opportunity to visit Medicover Genetics’ laboratories in Cyprus on a specified day. The winners will be officially announced on April 25, 2026 via the Medicover Genetics website. Participating schools will receive the results on April 24, 2026.
