Real Estate Conference: Cyprus and its Accession to the Schengen Area

Cyprus’ prospective accession to the Schengen Area represents a development with potentially multidimensional implications for the economy, and particularly for the real estate sector.

Strengthening the free movement of people, increasing mobility, and reinforcing the country’s European identity could influence demand from international buyers, tourism flows, and the island’s overall investment attractiveness. At the same time, the upgrade of Cyprus’ geopolitical and institutional standing may further enhance its position as a regional business hub. This year’s conference, which will take place on 17 March 2026 at the Hilton Nicosia Hotel, will address several critical issues shaping the future of the industry.

This topic will be examined through the presentation “Cyprus and its Accession to the Schengen Area: Challenges and Prospects – The Benefits for Citizens and the Economy,” delivered within the framework of the 20th Real Estate, Property Development & Construction Conference & Exhibition, presented by Altia. The presentation will analyze how the anticipated accession to the Schengen Area could affect property demand, cross-border mobility, investment decision-making, and the country’s strategic positioning on the European map.

Constantinos Petrides, former Minister of Finance, former Minister of the Interior, and former Deputy Minister to the President of the Republic of Cyprus will present the topic. With extensive experience in high-level policymaking, crisis management, and negotiations, he played a pivotal role as coordinator during the negotiations between the institutions of the Troika and Cyprus.

He has been a leading advocate for significant structural reforms and the improvement of the business environment, which, according to the IMF and the European Union, strengthened the growth prospects of the Cypriot economy. He has also been an active participant and contributor at the Eurogroup, ECOFIN, the EU Justice and Home Affairs Council, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank Annual Meetings.

Conference Agenda

Key topics include the institutional recognition of the property development profession, affordable housing as a growing European challenge, and the evolving roles of Nicosia and Limassol as urban and investment hubs.

Within this dynamic and complex environment, a dedicated session on Artificial Intelligence will serve as a catalyst for new thinking, examining how real estate professionals can move beyond time-consuming, traditional practices and adopt smart, automated systems that enhance efficiency, productivity, and competitiveness.
