No threat has been identified in relation to the activation of security measures that took place at the British Bases, Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said in a post.
“Regarding the activation of security measures that took place earlier at the British Bases, it is clarified that no threat has been identified,” he said in the post, noting that the activation of security protocols and the sounding of sirens were carried out as part of precautionary measures.
“No incident has emerged from the checks,” he added in the 4 March evening post. As a result, the activation of the measures has now ended, while the competent authorities continue to monitor the situation closely in line with established procedures, he concluded.
In the early hours of 2 March, a Shahed-type drone struck military facilities in the British Bases, hosted in Akrotiri, in the southern tip of Cyprus, causing minor damage, amid regional turmoil following the US-Israeli attacks on Iran. The attack by the Iranian-made unmanned aerial vehicle, believed to be linked to Hezbollah operating in Lebanon, prompted heightened security measures, while several countries said they were deploying warships, fighter jets and other military assistance to shield Cyprus. Nicosia reiterates that it has no involvement in the wider Middle East conflict.
