Cyprus aims to sell natural gas to Europe via Egypt in 2027, sources say, following ENI negotiations

The aim of the negotiations with the Italian energy company ENI is the sale of natural gas to Europe via Egypt in 2027, government sources have said, in relation to President Nikos Christodoulides’ 27 February meeting in Rome with ENI Chief Executive Officer Claudio Descalzi.

According to the sources' statements to CNA, President Christodoulides and Descalzi, during their two-hour meeting in Rome on Friday morning, agreed on a direction in consultation with the legal teams of both sides. A videoconference between the two parties was scheduled for later in the day to reach conclusions and brief the President of the Republic and Descalzi accordingly on whether all outstanding issues have been resolved so they can proceed.

The goal, the sources said, is - if all goes well - to conclude consultations and for the two sides to sign the agreement on 31 March, in the context of a natural gas forum in Egypt, so that the development plan can be submitted to the Council of Ministers. If everything proceeds smoothly, they noted, the objective is the sale of natural gas to Europe, via Egypt, in 2027.
