A.F.I.S. Cyprus, the only licensed battery management organisation in Cyprus, has announced the results of its 2025 annual review, a year marked by the achievement of a major historic milestone: the collection of more than one million kilograms of batteries since 2009.
"The participation of citizens and businesses in the effort toward a greener Cyprus has borne fruit. During 2025, a total of 3,245 bin collections were carried out across the island, resulting in the collection of 91,111 kilograms of portable batteries," the announcement notes.
It continues that, these figures confirm the consistency and commitment of Cypriot consumer to recycling, despite ongoing challenges, and further strengthen the organisation’s strategy to reduce toxic waste in landfills.
"The greatest achievement of 2025 is the attainment of the historic milestone of 1,021,719 kilograms collected since the organisation began operations in 2009. Put simply, A.F.I.S. Cyprus has succeeded in removing more than 1,000 tons of hazardous materials from the environment," the announcement says.
A.F.I.S. also points out that this achievement was supported "by the impressive expansion of the collection network, which now includes 6,135 bins placed at strategic locations (supermarkets, retail stores, schools, public buildings and banks), making battery recycling accessible in every corner of Cyprus."
A.F.I.S. Cyprus was established as a non-profit organisation on the initiative of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) and the country’s leading battery importers, in response to the need to comply with European Directive 2006/66/EC.
Since 2009, the organisation has consistently invested in public information and awareness, particularly targeting the younger generation. Through school competitions and media campaigns, A.F.I.S has managed to transform a simple action, disposing of a battery in a designated bin, into a matter of social responsibility.
According to earlier data, the organisation began in 2009 with only a few hundred bins and collections amounting to just a few tons, and has since grown to become one of the most successful recycling organizations in Europe relative to the country’s population.
“The completion of the first million kilograms is a victory for the environment of Cyprus. However, we are not complacent. Every battery that ends up in an A.F.I.S. bin is a battery that will not contaminate our groundwater or soil. Together, we are moving forward towards the next million,” the organisation’s management states.
