Harris Georgiades: Europe’s economic future needs both realism and vision

Harris Georgiades is one of those figures whose name is synonymous with stability, reform, and substance. For more than a decade, he has been among the most influential voices in Cyprus’s political and economic landscape — a policymaker who navigated moments of deep crisis with composure, pragmatism, and a clear vision for the country’s future.

Today, as Member of Parliament, Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign and European Affairs, and Chairman of the Glafcos Clerides Institute, Georgiades continues to shape the national and European dialogue on policy, governance, and reform. His participation in the 16th Limassol Economic Forum, taking place on October 25, 2025, at the Parklane Resort & Spa, is highly anticipated — not only for the depth of his insight but also for his ability to connect economic thinking with strategic foresight.

From Crisis to Stability – and from Stability to Vision

Harris Georgiades’ tenure as Minister of Finance of the Republic of Cyprus (April 2013 – December 2019) marked one of the most challenging and defining chapters in the island’s modern history. Taking office in the midst of an unprecedented financial crisis, he was instrumental in steering Cyprus back to economic stability and growth, restoring international credibility, and rebuilding investor confidence.

Under his leadership, Cyprus exited the bailout programme ahead of schedule, regained access to international markets, and laid the groundwork for a more resilient economy. His tenure stands as proof that pragmatism and determination can coexist with long-term vision — and that responsible economic management is, at its core, an act of political courage.

A European Voice of Reason

At the Limassol Economic Forum 2025, Georgiades will join a distinguished group of leaders and experts discussing the geopolitical and economic challenges of a transforming world. This year’s theme, “The Dawn of a New World Order,” provides the perfect setting for his perspective — one grounded in experience but always looking forward.

As a committed European, he often highlights the need for Europe to redefine its role in an increasingly fragmented world: to balance economic discipline with social cohesion, fiscal responsibility with innovation, and national priorities with collective European progress. For Georgiades, the future of Europe depends on a fine equilibrium — between competitiveness and solidarity, reform and stability, growth and sustainability.

His views go beyond Cyprus’s domestic landscape; they reflect a deep understanding of the structural and strategic shifts shaping the European economy. At a time when Europe faces new challenges in energy, defense, and technology, his voice is one of pragmatic optimism — advocating policy grounded in evidence, and leadership guided by conviction.

Bridging Thought and Policy

With a BA and MA in International Relations and Economics from the University of Reading, UK, Harris Georgiades combines academic rigour with hands-on experience in governance. He is the author of two books, a regular contributor to local and international media, and a proponent of reform and forward-looking policymaking.

Through the Glafcos Clerides Institute, which he chairs, Georgiades champions open dialogue on democracy, European integration, and strategic culture — continuing the legacy of thoughtful, values-driven leadership inspired by one of Cyprus’s most respected statesmen. His approach reflects a rare blend of intellectual depth and practical insight, qualities that make his contributions both timely and timeless.

The Limassol Economic Forum – Where Ideas Shape Strategy

Now in its 16th edition, the Limassol Economic Forum has become Cyprus’s foremost platform for dialogue on business, geopolitics, and the economy. It gathers each year an exceptional lineup of global thinkers — from ministers and diplomats to economists, academics, and CEOs — to explore the forces shaping the future.

This year’s Forum, under the theme “The Dawn of a New World Order,” will delve into the realignments transforming international relations, economic structures, and technological development. Discussions will span from global diplomacy and European defense to fiscal strategy, innovation, and sustainability — reflecting the Forum’s mission to unite ideas, insight, and impact.
