Sergios Sergiou on the exclusive brands and strong Cypriot element represented at Cyprus Duty Free

With a primary mission to transform a traveler's time at the airport into a real experience and not just a shopping stop, Cyprus Duty Free, as it is widely known, has been operating at Cypriot airports since 2006.

Participating in a series of interviews hosted by Hermes Airports with executives from the aviation community of the airports in Cyprus, the Supply Chain Manager of CTC – ARI Airports Ltd, Sergios Sergiou, highlights the importance attributed to the Cypriot element and what it represents when it comes to traveller's purchases.

In a video interview, he refers to the company's international presence, talks about the multi-million dollar expansion and upgrade projects that preceded it, and analyses the international marketing practices they follow as well as the innovative ideas they implement, to constantly improve service, "marrying" global know-how with local identity.

As for their product range, it is constantly evolving with the inclusion of new options, Sergiou says, adding, "We monitor global trends, expand our offerings, and provide exclusive brands that cannot be found elsewhere in Cyprus."

At the same time, as he mentions, through lines such as 'Kypriaka' and exclusive collaborations with Cypriot producers,   award-winning products in various categories are created, some of which he lists in the interview, and which include OVIS Whiskey, Iris Blue Gin, XO Brandy, and the Chypre fragrance.

The interview, in Greek, can be watched below, followed by a transcription of the video interview, translated into English:

Under what framework have you undertaken the management of the commercial areas of our two airports? What is the mission of Cyprus Duty Free?

Our company, CTC–ARI Airports Ltd, or as most people know us, Cyprus Duty Free, has been responsible for managing the commercial areas at Larnaca and Paphos airports since 2006. Our mission is to turn the traveller’s time at the airport into an experience—not just a shopping stop, but a connection with Cyprus and what it represents. The airport is the first and last impression a visitor has, and our role is to make it unforgettable.

What is the significance of belonging to a larger group that manages similar commercial spaces at international airports, and how is that expertise transferred to our market?

Cyprus Duty Free is part of the ARI group. An Irish state organisation, Aer Rianta, created the duty-free industry by opening the first store in 1947 at Shannon in Ireland. Today, the group has a strong presence in international airports around the world, and that experience is directly transferred to our market. We apply international marketing practices, introduce innovative ideas, and continually improve service. In this way, we blend global expertise with local identity.

How do you continuously develop your product range, and what exclusive brands do you offer within the Cypriot market?

Our product range is constantly evolving. We monitor global trends, expand our offerings, and provide exclusive brands that cannot be found elsewhere in Cyprus. At the same time, through lines such as 'Kypriaka' and exclusive collaborations with Cypriot producers, we create award-winning products in various categories. Among them are OVIS Whiskey, Iris Blue Gin, XO Brandy, and the Chypre fragrance—all internationally recognized. These products showcase the outstanding craftsmanship, culture, and flavors of Cyprus through innovative ideas and modern packaging.

This combination of international and local options is what sets us apart.

Tell us about the expansion of the commercial spaces at the airports in Larnaca and Paphos.

In 2021, we completed projects worth 13 million euros in Larnaca. These works completely upgraded the commercial spaces with modern aesthetics, functionality, and new technologies. At the same time, we undertook renovations in Paphos so that travelers could enjoy the same high-level experience everywhere. Today, we are planning to further expand the retail experience in Paphos, in conjunction with the planned expansion of the airport by Hermes Airports.

How does retail in an airport's commercial space differ from that of a mall?

Retail in airports is a unique challenge. The traveller has limited time, is in a different psychological state, and is looking for something quick, high-quality, and often unique. The audience is international, with different cultures and expectations, which pushes us to offer variety and flexibility. On the other hand, as in every retail space, the experience, hospitality, and image of the store remain key elements.

Our goal is to continue investing in innovation, sustainability, and support for the local community. To make every visit to Cyprus’ airports a memorable experience that showcases the best side of our country.
