Defence Minister announces approval of decree for women's voluntary enlistment

Minister of Defence Vassilis Palmas has announced the approval of the decree for the voluntary enlistment of women, noting that the decision “marks a new era for the National Guard.”

Speaking to the press after the Cabinet meeting on 17 September, Palmas stated that the decree concerns the classes of 2017–2025, with enlistment scheduled for 30 and 31 October. He added that an official announcement with all the details over the procedure will be issued soon.

“Defence and security are a collective matter in which every citizen has both the obligation and the right to contribute equally,” he said.

He further noted that this decision recognises the role and the right of women to actively participate in the defence of the Republic of Cyprus and highlights that the true strength of the National Guard derives from the professionalism and skills of all those who choose to serve in it.

The Minister explained that all organisational matters have been settled, and what remains now is the expression of interest through the recruitment office.

He clarified that women's enlistment is voluntary and that there are no special incentives given to attract volunteers.

“Our primary concern this year was to provide the possibility through legislation for women, if they so wish, to enlist. And this creates better conditions for gender equality,” he added.

The Minister of Defence stated that the duration of service for women will be from six to 14 months, with a minimum of six months required in order for the service to be considered as completed. The dates for expressing interest will be announced soon, after the organisational procedures are finalised.

As for the training of women, Palmas said it will be the same as for men.
