George Michaelides: Cyprus is transforming into a regional centre for cybersecurity services

Cyprus' ambition to become a regional cybersecurity services hub and the right direction it has been following to date, was the focus of the speech of the Commissioner for Communications, George Michaelides, at the 5th Cyber Security Conference.

As he mentioned, this goal is directly linked to regulatory challenges and the need to align with European Union legislation, such as the NIS1 and NIS2 directives and Regulation (EU) 2021/887.

Michaelides highlighted the contribution of the Regional ICT Academy, which focuses on awareness-raising and skills development through training, retraining and national and regional exercises. To date, more than 5,600 participants have taken part in 195 events, of which 180 at national and 15 at international level, with the participation of 42 countries. According to the Commissioner, these figures demonstrate the progress that has been made and the potential of Cyprus in the sector.

At the same time, he referred to the country's significant achievements in a European context, highlighting, among other things, the fact that Cyprus ranked third among 30 European countries, securing approximately €10.3 million from the total budget of the NCC Calls.

Concluding, Michaelides sent the message that Cyprus can achieve its goal through grand visionary plans, small and steady steps, and rapid escalation of successful initiatives.
