Cyprus to sign CoE convention on protection of lawyers, President says

The signing of the Council of Europe Convention on the Protection of the Profession of Lawyer, will be put before the Council of Ministers during the coming days, Cyprus President, Nikos Christodoulides has said.

Speaking on 8 August at an event marking the 70th anniversary of the Cyprus Bar Association (CBA) establishment, Christodoulides stressed that the aim is to reinforce safeguards for lawyers to practice their profession independently and without discrimination, undue obstacles or interference.

“The purpose of the Convention is to strengthen the protection of the legal profession and the right to exercise it, free from attacks, threats, harassment, or intimidation,” the President noted.

Christodoulides said that approving the Convention will send a clear message that the government demonstrates in practice its “unwavering trust and support” to lawyers  in Cyprus. He pointed out that lawyers’ ability to fulfill their institutional role without interference is not only a duty but also a right, both for themselves and for citizens.

At the same time, the President reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting the CBA in its efforts to strengthen the justice system. He pointed to a series of reforms introduced since his administration took office, including laws to improve the operation of courts, promote alternative dispute resolution tools, such as arbitration and mediation, and restructure criminal jurisdiction through changes in the Assize Courts.

He also highlighted the need to reduce the case backlog, enhance enforcement of judicial decisions, and upgrade court infrastructure across Cyprus, particularly the outdated Nicosia District Court. Positive developments on this front are expected within the year, he said, stressing that modern facilities, staffing, and technology will significantly improve the administration of justice.
