President Nikos Christodoulides has given assurances that the Paphos-Polis Chrysochous road "will of course be built."
When asked to comment on recent negative developments and asked how important it is for this project to be carried out, the President of the Republic replied, "It is very important that this road be built and we will do everything possible to implement it. We have plans for this particular road and for other projects, important projects. And we have even made specific changes through the Accountant General, who has a primary role to play in the issue of public contracts, so that we do not face such problems."
It is recalled that the Tender Review Authority put a stop - until further notice - to the new tender announced by the Department of Public Works for the "Completion of the design and construction of the Paphos-Polis Chrysochous motorway, Section 1-Phase (A)", following an appeal by the company "AKTOR GROUP OF COMPANIES" ("AKTOR").
AKTOR, in its appeal, also requested the issuance of interim measures, a request to which the contracting authority (Department of Public Works) objected.
Meanwhile, work on the second phase of the improvement project of the existing Paphos-Polis Chrysochous road is continuing as normal, according to the Director of the Department of Public Works, Eleftherios Eleftherios.
Eleftheriou on 26 August participated in a meeting in Paphos with the company that has won the bid for the execution of the project, subsequently stating to CNA that it had been a continuation of the meetings that the Department holds with the respective contractors on the progress of the work and on resolving problems that arise during the execution of the projects.
The meeting was also attended by the First Executive Engineer of the Department of Public Works, Costakis Constantinou.
The Director of the Department of Public Works noted that the project is progressing satisfactorily and that any problems that arise, as in all projects, are being addressed by the Department of Public Works in collaboration with the contractor towards resolving them.
He continued, saying that during the execution of the project, no serious problems were observed that might halt the progress of the project.
The contract for the project was signed on 28 November, 2024 between the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, and specifically between the Director of the Department of Public Works, Eleftherios Eleftherios, and on behalf of the Lebanese company Araco Construction CY Limited, owned by Mohammed Rokaya.
The project concerns improvement works on the existing Paphos-Polis Chrysochous road (B7). It concerns the construction of two additional uphill traffic lanes, one on the section of the road from Mesogi to Tsada (on the traffic lane towards Tsada), approximately 1.8 km long, and one on the section of the road from Giolo to Stroumbi (on the traffic lane towards Paphos), approximately 1.5 km long.
The implementation of the project began in around January 2025 with a duration of 52 weeks and a cost of €3,479,748.00 plus VAT. Its completion is expected around January 2026, Eleftheriou concluded.
