Cyprus' President and Austria's Chancellor note good relations between the two countries

President Nikos Christodoulides and Austria's Chancellor Christian Stocker, in a tête-à-tête meeting in Nicosia referred to the two countries’ good relations and expressed will to enhance them in the fields of migration, security, education and economy.

Welcoming Stocker, who is currently paying Cyprus an official visit, President Christodoulides noted that Austria's Chancellor visits Nicosia a few months after he assumed his duties as Chancellor.

“We have very good relations and I'm looking forward to our discussion on how to enhanceour cooperation even more, especially on the issues of migration, security”, he said. Noting that Cyprus and Austria are two of the EU Member States that are not NATO members, President Christodoulides said that during their 22 August meeting they would exchange views on regional and international developments, while he would also present Nicosia’s priorities ahead of the Cyprus EU Presidency in the first half of 2026.

President Christodoulides also thanked the Austrian Chancellor for his country’s “substantial contribution” to the UN force in Cyprus “from the very beginning, since 1964”. “More than 10,000 Austrians have served in the UN force in Cyprus, and we’re grateful for your contribution”, President Christodoulides said, while also thanking Stocker for his country’s “clear position” with regard to the solution of the Cyprus problem.

Stocker thanked President Christodoulides for the “very warm welcome, for the great hospitality and for the good cooperation between our countries”.

He referred to the good relations between the two countries noting that his visit provides the opportunity to deepen cooperation in issues such as the economy, security, energy and education.

He also wished success for Cyprus’ EU Presidency.

After their private meeting, the two leaders participated in expanded talks between the two countries' delegations.
