President Nikos Christodoulides will be participating in a teleconference of EU leaders on Ukraine today, 19 August, following Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s meetings with US President Donald Trump in Washington.
In a written statement, Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said the video conference will be convened by President of the European Council Antonio Costa, with the participation of the heads of state and government of the European Union member states. The aim, he said, is to evaluate the meetings that took place on 18 August in Washington regarding Ukraine.
Letymbiotis had previously relayed Nicosia’s hope that the US effort will yield a positive result, “always in line with Ukraine’s wishes”.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy met US President Donald Trump at the White House, before joining a joint session with leaders of Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Finland, the European Union, and NATO.
Taking to Truth Social afterwards, Donald Trump said he had contacted Russian President Vladimir Putin to arrange a meeting with Zelensky.
“At the conclusion of the meetings, I called President Putin, and began the arrangements for a meeting, at a location to be determined, between President Putin and President Zelensky. After that meeting takes place, we will have a Trilat, which would be the two Presidents, plus myself,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
German chancellor Friedrich Merz said after the talks at the White House that the meeting between Zelensky and Putin could take place within two weeks.
