Cyprus will face dangerously high temperatures on Wednesday, 13 August with the Department of Meteorology warning that temperatures could soar to 45°C over inland areas and to around 36 degrees over the higher mountainous areas. A red-level alert for extreme maximum temperatures will be in effect from 11am to 5pm.
Furthermore, the Department of Forests issued a "red alert" for Wednesday, warning that the risk of forest fires is at the highest level. The Department emphasizes that causing a fire, according to the current legislation, constitutes an offense that carries severe penalties.
It appealed to the public to be especially careful during outings, completely avoiding actions and activities that could potentially cause a fire.
It also noted that if someone notices smoke or fire, they should immediately call 1407 (Department of Forests) or 112 (Fire Service).
