EIB ready to support Cyprus after wildfires, VP Kakouris says

The European Investment Bank is ready to support Cyprus with targeted financing and technical assistance after the devastating wildfires in the Limassol district, EIB Vice President Kyriacos Kakouris has said.

He was speaking at the Ministry of Finance, during the signing of a €100 million loan agreement for the road network in Cyprus on 31 July.

Before signing the new loan agreement, the EIB Vice President conveyed the support of EIB President Nadia Calvino to those affected by the recent wildfires in Cyprus.

“The scenes of destruction and the overall mobilisation of the authorities and local communities highlighted how critical preparedness, resilience, and the reinforcement of public infrastructure are”, Kakouris said, adding that in moments like these, it becomes even more evident why it is essential to invest in networks that protect lives, connect people, and withstand the pressures of the climate crisis.

In this context, he noted, "the EIB stresses its full readiness to support Cyprus, providing targeted financial and technical assistance for the strengthening of infrastructure and prevention mechanisms, as well as for improving the management of such emergencies."

When asked about the matter following the ceremony, the Minister of Finance, Makis Keravnos, responded that he had already discussed the issue with Kakouris and thanked the EIB for their immediate willingness to assist with the problem.

"Depending on the specific needs that will arise, we will revisit the issue with the EIB. After all, our cooperation with the EIB is long-standing and multifaceted, and the government will make use of every available opportunity to respond immediately to the needs that have emerged," the Minister said, noting that the specifics are expected by tomorrow, Friday, as the government's goal is to immediately begin implementing the announced plans to support those affected by the wildfires.
