Alphamega: Green light for new hypermarket in Engomi

Approval has been secured from the Environmental Authority for the construction of a new Alphamega hypermarket in Nicosia suburb Engomi, following the submission of an Environmental Impact Study in June 2024.

The new hypermarket will be built on a plot of land located directly across from the existing Alphamega store. As InBusinessNews has previously reported, C.A. Papaellinas Trading Ltd secured a plot of land near the Alphamega hypermarket in Engomi, which belongs to the Holy Metropolis of Kykkos, with the aim of constructing new premises.

According to the opinion of the Department of Environment, the approved mixed-use development will include, among other things, a hypermarket, restaurants, offices, and retail shops with auxiliary uses, such as a gym space.

Construction to be completed within two years

The plot where the development will take place lies within a parcel in the Municipality of Engomi. The plot spans 33,711 sq.m. and is designated for office and commercial use.

Construction works are expected to be completed within 24 months. The building area will be 11,642 sq.m., with a coverage area of 12,135 sq.m., and the proposed height is 9.5 m.

The development will include 640 parking spaces, of which 13 are designated for persons with disabilities (PwD) and 12 for persons with reduced mobility (PRM). In addition, 17 bicycle parking spaces are proposed. Specifically, 379 spaces will be underground and 261 at ground level.

According to the environmental report, 140 employees are expected to work at the new hypermarket, and the estimated number of daily visitors is 13,000. Operating hours are seven days a week, from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM.

There are five vehicular access points from the public road network to the General Spatial Plan area, of which this development is a part:

  • Northern access from Griva Digeni Avenue
  • Eastern access from Ag. Prokopiou / Archangelou Avenue
  • Southern access from Macedonias Avenue
  • Western access from N. Kranidioti
  • Northwestern access from A. Avraamidi

The development site is situated close to various types of land uses. The main surrounding uses include residential and commercial developments, while to the west there are primarily residential areas, dining venues, educational institutions, and commercial developments.

Regarding recent openings of Alphamega hypermarkets, the expansion plan is proceeding as scheduled. In January, the chain expanded its presence in the Paphos district with a new store in Mandria, following the opening of a store in Astromeritis in December 2024—a move aimed at strengthening the chain’s footprint in semi-mountainous and mountainous areas.
