Gregory Dellas: Compliance cannot remain static... global risks require global responses

A new perspective on the role of compliance in the era of global challenges and technological transformation was presented by Gregory Dellas, Group Chief Compliance & Risk Officer at ECOMMBX and Chair of the ACAMS Cyprus Chapter, at the 11th International Compliance Forum.

His address focused on how values, purpose, and international cooperation are emerging as the most critical components for a meaningful and effective compliance strategy.

What matters in the field of compliance today, he claimed, are "our values and our impact", as he told attendees at the conference, organised by ECOMMBX, that compliance needs to evolve beyond procedural frameworks and to serve as a directional tool with substantive content.

In a time of rapid change, where geopolitical risks intersect with global crises such as environmental destruction and asymmetric threats, compliance cannot remain static, said Dellas, stressing that global risks require global responses, grounded in principles, institutions, and a shared commitment. Protecting the environment, maintaining the integrity of financial systems, and strengthening trust in institutions demand alignment between governments, businesses, and society, he added.

As he said, compliance is a catalyst that connects all stakeholders.

The digital revolution is yet another transformative factor, according to Dellas. The nature of financial crime is constantly evolving, leveraging technological innovations, and creating a need for new skills and heightened vigilance from compliance professionals.

Flexibility and interconnectedness are no longer optional—they are prerequisites for survival and progress, he emphasised.

In conclusion, Dellas highlighted that collaboration is a strategic necessity. No business, organisation, or institution can tackle today’s challenges alone. Only through coordinated action can meaningful prevention and the fight against financial crime be achieved.

Gregory Dellas’ message is clear: compliance is now a matter of broader responsibility, and those who realise this in time will be one step ahead in a world that does not wait.
