Labour Minister underlines importance of developing AI applications for the labour market

Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Yiannis Panayiotou, in his intervention at a Ministerial Conference, emphasised the importance of developing artificial intelligence applications, considering both the enhancement of the production process and the avoidance of creating new inequalities.

He was speaking at an event organised by the Polish Presidency of the EU in Gdańsk, on the challenges and opportunities presented by the rapid advancement of digital technology and its impact on the labour sector.

A press release issued by the Ministry of Labour said in his intervention, Panayiotou referred to the need to enhance the capabilities of employers and employees for the effective utilisation of artificial intelligence to boost the productivity of the European economy.

He also spoke about Cyprus's recent initiatives to strengthen the framework for the responsible implementation of Artificial Intelligence, such as the establishment of the National Specialised Committee for Artificial Intelligence, which has taken on the task of developing, integrating, and implementing artificial intelligence in Cyprus.

On the sidelines of the conference, Panayiotou met with Oliver Ropke, President of the European Economic and Social Committee, with whom he discussed, the role of artificial intelligence in the workplace environment and the related challenges for employees and employers, a topic that is included in the priorities of the Ministry of Labour in view of Cyprus's upcoming European Presidency.
