Tourist bookings on online platforms up 23.8% in Q1 2024

Nights spent in short-term rental accommodation, which were booked via online platforms Airbnb, Booking, Expedia Group or TripAdvisor, increased by 23.8% in Cyprus during the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023 (28.3% in the EU), according to the latest monthly data released by Eurostat.

Across the EU, a total of 123.7 million nights were spent in short-term rental accommodation booked online in Q1 2024. Out of these, 33.3 million nights were recorded in January 2024 (+16.7% compared with January 2023), 41.2 million nights were registered in February (+19.0%) and 49.2 million were registered in March (+48.0%).

In Cyprus, there was a total of 760,403 nights spent in short-term rental accommodation booked online in Q1 2024 (+23.8% compared to 612,501 during Q1 2023). Of these, 200,208 were recorded in January (+20.8% compared with January 2023), 233,844 in February (+21.4%) and 326,351 in March (+28.4%).

These data are collected from four private collaborative economy platforms as part of an agreement with the European Commission. Regional data are released one quarter later than the national data, in this case regarding the last quarter of 2023.

Regions in Spain, Croatia and France lead in 2023

The most popular regions for short-term rental accommodation booked via online platforms in 2023 were Andalucía in Spain (35.6 million nights), Adriatic Croatia (32.6 million) and the French region Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (24.9 million).

Out of the top 20 regions on the NUTS 2 level of statistical analysis in 2023, six regions each were in Spain and France, five were in Italy, two regions were in Portugal and one was in Croatia.
