Digital Citizen App set to be launched tomorrow – All you need to know

The Digital Citizen App is set to be launched tomorrow, 5 December, as promised by President Nikos Christodoulides when he formally announced Cyprus' rebranding in the international markets.

As he said at the time, “The new Digital Citizen Application, set to launch soon, along with the gov.cy portal, will provide citizens and businesses with efficient, modern digital services. This initiative underscores our commitment to reducing bureaucracy and administrative burdens”.

So what will the app have to offer?

The Digital Citizen App is a mobile application, through which members of the public will be able to create, save and check official digital documents.

According to an official from the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, as a first step, citizens will be able to issue the following documents in digital format:

  1. Identity card
  2. Driving licence
  3. MOT

Next steps include interconnecting the Digital Citizen App with the relevant Greek app Gov Gr Wallet so that digital documents within the apps can be mutually recognised, so as to further facilitate the activities of Greek and Cypriot citizens moving and residing in the two countries.

Travel documents will not be created through the App, the source said, adding that the deputy ministry is currently looking at many options - use cases for the app, such as the Fan Card, for entrance in stadiums.

The Digital Citizen app, to be gradually enriched with more and more documents and certificates, is expected to make citizens' daily lives friendlier, easier and more convenient, reducing bureaucracy, the source said. An additional advantage of the app is that it provides a secure means for authentication and identification.
