Beware of Cleon: Cyprus braces for first heatwave

Cyprus is bracing for its first prolonged heatwave of the summer, as the result of a high-pressure weather system dubbed ‘Cleon’, which has been sweeping across Southern Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean.

The heatwave is expected to hit the island on 13 July, pushing temperatures past 40°C for five to six days. 13 and 14 July will be the hottest days with temperatures expected to reach 42°C.

Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, the head of Cyprus’ met office, Kleanthis Nicolaides, said that it was still too early to estimate how long the heatwave will last. But he said relevant warnings will be issued if required.

“The heat wave will be accompanied by high levels of humidity, as well as a high UV index, making the atmosphere stifling. Vulnerable groups of the population are urged to be especially cautious,” said Nicolaides, as he reiterated that heatwaves like this were not uncommon in Cyprus in July.

Nicolaides said that heatwaves of this calibre are not unusual for Cyprus in July.
