Four years of GHS: The numbers

There are currently 943,978 beneficiaries registered with the General Health System (GHS), of whom 806,900 visited their personal doctor over the past year.

Addressing an event to mark the GHS’ four-year anniversary, the Chairman of the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) – the state agency that runs Cyprus’ healthcare system – Stavros Michael, said that the majority of beneficiaries (692,500) received medication while 611,200 visited medical specialists.

Also, 502,300 beneficiaries got lab tests and 286,500 visited dentists, while 90,500 surgeries were performed.

According to Michael, the HIO’s top priority is to keep the GHS strong, enhance its financial sustainability and offer lifelong equitable and seamless access to quality health care services for all.

He added that an actuarial study conducted by the ILO (International Labour Organisation) showed that the GHS is sustainable until 2030, with sufficient reserves.

Michael stressed that informing beneficiaries and cultivating the right culture towards the System was also vitally important.

“We are planning larger scale awareness campaigns addressed at both beneficiaries and providers for a more appropriate use of GHS services," he said.

The first phase of the GHS was launched on 1 June 2019, with the provision of outpatient health services. In 2020, phase two was implemented with the provision of inpatient health services.
