"It is a fact that the gaming sector has experienced significant growth in recent years, contributing to economic activity and the creation of added value for the Cypriot economy... Real progress is equally reflected in the quality of the sector's regulation, the transparency of its operation and, above all, the degree of protection it provides to citizens," pointed out Lucy Herodotou Mouskou, Director of Financial Management of Central Government Directorate, Ministry of Finance, in her address to the 9th Safer Gaming Conference.
Conveying a speech by the Minister of Finance, Makis Keravnos, she said that "the government of President Nikos Christodoulides has set the goal of maintaining healthy public finances, combined with the support of households and the protection of citizens. This includes the promotion of a modern gaming culture, where entertainment coexists with responsibility, the prevention of risks associated with betting and the use of technology for more effective supervision. Safe gaming should not be treated as a complementary policy or as a formal regulatory act. It must be at the core of the operation of the market and be the collective responsibility of the state, the National Betting Authority and all the bodies involved. In this context, informing citizens, preventing problematic occupation, identifying risks early, cultivating responsible behavior and protecting vulnerable groups are key conditions for the responsible and sustainable development of the organisation."
Emphasis on AI and Data Analytics Tools
This year's conference, as Herodotou Mouskou noted, places a special emphasis on artificial intelligence and data analysis tools, which can help better understand risks and strengthen protection mechanisms.
"In an ever-evolving environment, technology is rapidly changing the landscape of betting and gambling, creating new possibilities as well as new challenges. Supervision cannot remain static. It requires continuous adaptation, enhancement of know-how, utilisation of modern tools that can effectively respond to market developments. It requires zero tolerance towards illegality and at the same time requires close cooperation of all stakeholders. I hope that the discussions and suggestions that will be developed today will be a starting point for new ideas, meaningful collaborations and even more effective policies. Policies that will enhance a legal, transparent and above all safe gaming environment," she added.
