Over the past 50 years, Limassol has evolved from a quaint coastal town into a bustling, ultra-modern, sleek Finance and Technology hub, supporting the global perception of Cyprus as a safe harbour for business in the broader region.
While remaining the world’s third largest ship management hub since the ‘80s, Limassol has also become the leader in the island’s tech ecosystem, with figures from StartupBlink showing that the city is currently generating $2.6 billion from the startup ecosystem alone and capturing 42% of all active startups on the island. The city has grown exponentially – but not without challenges, as highlighted by public officials calling for more affordable housing in the rapidly developing metropolis, in an effort to keep jobs and business within its confines and maintain growth, and for greater efforts to retain talent. Earlier in the year, President Nikos Christodoulides announced €660 million package for the city, with large sums set to revitalise its infrastructure, as well as education and housing.
The city’s growth is undeniable and, despite the ongoing challenges, Limassol remains one of the top destinations for foreign capital and one of the selling points for Cyprus to the rest of the world. We present the views of the city officials, who are on the ground dealing with challenges ranging from infrastructure to housing, as well as those of business leaders from the real estate, trade & industry, tourism & leisure, finance, professional services, technology and shipping sectors, to gain an insight into why they chose the city as their base. We also speak to young entrepreneurs who are building businesses and careers in Limassol. Furthermore, we showcase some of the key findings of the LCCI’s latest Limassol Barometer and examine some of the large-scale developments shaping the city.
