GOLD New Issue: Let Justice Be Done

UNIC presents the new issue of GOLD, coming out on Sunday, 16 August. In this issue, we examine the impact of judicial reform and artificial intelligence on the legal profession and the court system, and reveal GOLD’s annual list of the 80+ leading law firms in Cyprus (click here).

For this year’s 13th Legal Issue, we present key figures behind Cyprus' legal institutions and some of the leading law firms that connect citizens and businesses with the machinery of justice. They all speak of a common concern: how to manage a system and a profession in the face of massive technological upheaval amid frustratingly slow steps towards reform.

All are agreed that artificial intelligence (AI) is well-established, especially in the legal profession, changing not only what clients expect but also how firms price their services. The experts to whom we spoke insisted that, while AI undoubtedly offers significant benefits, these must not come at the cost of human judgement. Lawyers, meanwhile, remain the interface between citizen and state, between investor and regulator, between complexity and a plain answer.

Despite notable reforms, familiar bottlenecks persist – yet the sector is not standing still. Cyprus continues to achieve ever closer integration with its EU counterparts and further alignment with international bodies, bolstering trust in its institutions. However, that also adds further layers of compliance, from sanctions screening and anti-money-laundering obligations to the requirements of the EU's new AI Act.

In this issue, we present the thoughts and views of Costas Fytiris, Minister of Justice and Public Order, Michalis Vorkas, President of the Cyprus Bar Association, Antonis R. Liatsos, President of the Supreme Constitutional Court, and Stéphanie Laulhé Shaelou, Advocate General at the Court of Justice of the European Union. Furthermore, the Partners in eight leading law firms share their opinions and concerns, together with three in-house legal advisors of companies in key sectors of the economy.
