However, innovation is not only about technology – it is about creating an environment where great ideas can emerge,” the CEO of Reconiq Software Ltd, a Member of the Plath Group, Michael Kalt, says in an interview with GOLD magazine.
Following the company’s recognition at the 14th International Investment Awards organised by Invest Cyprus and hosted by GOLD magazine, Kalt discusses the company’s long-term commitment to Cyprus, its culture of innovation and the role the island is set to play in its international growth strategy.
Headquartered in Hamburg, Germany, Reconiq Software Ltd, develops high-performance software and software modules for modern reconnaissance, SIGINT and electronic warfare systems. Its core capabilities include real-time data processing, signal and communication management, and AI-supported analysis, while its software supports the full intelligence cycle, from sensor control and data acquisition to analysis, classification, storage and operational evaluation. The company, which currently has a staff of 60, began its operations in Cyprus in 2016, having chosen the island for its high standard of education, excellent infrastructure and proximity to the defence industry. It recently launched ready-to-use AI modules for electronic warfare.
As the country strengthens its position as a regional defence technology hub, what unique advantages does it offer companies developing advanced defence and security software?
Cyprus offers an exceptional combination of highly qualified engineers, the stability of the European Union and a strategic location connecting Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. For Reconiq, innovation depends on talented people and, over the past decade, we have found exactly that in Cyprus. Equally important is the collaborative environment. Government, academia and industry are increasingly working together to strengthen the country’s technology ecosystem, creating excellent conditions for developing next-generation defence and security technologies.
The sector is evolving rapidly, so how is Reconiq ensuring that it remains at the forefront of innovation?
Innovation starts with curiosity. Technology changes every day and standing still simply isn’t an option. We continuously invest in artificial intelligence, software-defined intelligence solutions, advanced signal processing and automation. However, innovation is not only about technology – it is about creating an environment where great ideas can emerge. An excellent example is the international Hackathon, which we host in Cyprus every two years. More than 100 engineers and technology experts from across the Reconiq and Plath organisations come together to explore emerging technologies, develop prototypes and challenge conventional thinking. Many of these ideas later evolve into customer solutions and future product innovations. This culture of collaboration, curiosity and continuous learning enables us to stay ahead in a rapidly evolving technology landscape.
Given Cyprus’ recent investment through the EU’s SAFE programme, how does your company intend to help the country expand its local defence-tech capacity and meet European standards?
Europe is entering a new phase of defence cooperation. Reconiq welcomes initiatives that strengthen European technological sovereignty while encouraging industrial collaboration. We will continue investing in our engineering capabilities in Cyprus, developing local talent and working closely with European partners. Our focus on quality, cybersecurity and interoperability enables us to contribute to multinational programmes and support the continued growth of Cyprus as a trusted European defence technology hub.
Looking ahead, do you expect Cyprus to play an even greater role in your international operations?
Without any doubt. Cyprus has become one of the Reconiq Group’s strategic technology centres and we expect its importance to continue growing. As demand for advanced software-defined intelligence solutions increases, we will keep expanding our engineering capabilities and attracting outstanding talent. Cyprus is not only where we develop technology – it is also where we bring people together. Our biennial Hackathon in Cyprus has become a flagship event, bringing together more than 100 engineers to shape the technologies of tomorrow. Our ambition is clear: to further strengthen Cyprus as one of Europe’s leading centres for software excellence in defence and security while creating highly qualified jobs, investing in innovation and building long-term partnerships. Our success has never been built on facilities or technology alone. It has always been built by talented people who share a common vision. That is exactly what we have found in Cyprus and that is why we are confident about our future here.
Winning an Invest Cyprus International Investment Award recognises not only Reconiq Software Ltd’s success but also its commitment to Cyprus. What does this award mean to the company and why is it important to your long-term vision?
This award is a very special recognition for us because it reflects a journey that began almost 10 years ago. When Reconiq Software Ltd was established in Limassol, the vision was to build an engineering centre capable of developing world-class software for highly demanding defence and security applications. Today, that vision has become reality. More importantly, this award belongs to our people. Our engineers have built an outstanding reputation for technical excellence, creativity and reliability. Their work contributes directly to technologies that help protect democratic societies and critical infrastructure. For Reconiq, Cyprus is not simply a location where we operate – it is part of who we are. We have built long-term relationships here, invested continuously in local talent and created an environment where innovation can thrive. This recognition encourages us to continue that journey and invest even further in Cyprus.
