Irene Piki: From strategy to actions for a stronger Euro-Mediterranean cooperation

A strategic panel entitled 'Made by Euromed: Europe MENA economic and partnership roadmaps for integration and shared sovereignty' was held at EUROMED DAYS 2026, highlighting the importance of cooperation between Europe and MENA to strengthen resilience, competitiveness and sustainable development.

In her statement, the Deputy Minister to the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Irene Piki, stated that the Mediterranean is currently one of the most strategic regions for the European Union, especially in the complex geopolitical environment of recent years. As she noted, the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union offers an important opportunity to further highlight the role of the region and to strengthen cooperation between Europe and its neighboring Mediterranean countries.

She stressed that the challenge is no longer to formulate new strategies or declarations, but to move towards specific actions that will demonstrate in practice the value of Euro-Mediterranean cooperation.

Referring further to the role of Cyprus, she noted that the country has a deep knowledge of the specificities and needs of the Mediterranean, as this is a reality it experiences daily. As she explained, Cyprus can act as a bridge of understanding between the European Union and the countries of the wider region, contributing both to a better understanding of the challenges of the Mediterranean by European partners and to facilitating the access of regional partners to the European market and European institutions.

At the same time, he referred as a typical example to the initiatives undertaken during the Cyprus Presidency, highlighting the importance of the participation of leaders of the region in high-level European meetings, as a means of strengthening political dialogue and regional cooperation.
