The strategic role of the Eastern Mediterranean as a pillar of Europe's energy security was highlighted during the Ministerial Meeting of the 3+1 format (Cyprus, Greece, Israel and the United States), with Energy Minister Michael Damianos underlining the importance of close cooperation between the four countries to create a more resilient and reliable energy environment.
In a post from the Atlantic Council, Damianos noted that the Eastern Mediterranean is gaining increasing geostrategic importance both for Europe's energy security and for the stability of the wider region.
As he mentioned, Cyprus, Greece and Israel, in close coordination with the United States, can contribute substantially to shaping a more resilient, reliable and diversified energy environment, while strengthening transatlantic cooperation.
The Minister of Energy also participated in a fireside chat with the Greek Minister of Environment and Energy, Stavros Papastavrou, where, as he pointed out, the excellent relations, continuous communication and close coordination between Cyprus and Greece were confirmed, elements that constitute a stable pillar of regional cooperation and the joint presence of the two countries in the Eastern Mediterranean.
At the same time, he referred to the priorities of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union, emphasising that Nicosia is working for a more secure, competitive and energy-resilient Europe, emphasizing the diversification of energy sources, affordable energy and the strengthening of critical infrastructure.
"With a plan, credibility and strong alliances, Cyprus continues to actively contribute to European energy security and transatlantic cooperation," Damianos noted.
