Marios Kolokasides: “At ZK Foods, we invested early in ERP, WMS, TMS, and CRM systems to enhance operational efficiency, improve visibility and support data-driven decision making”

“Digital transformation in Cyprus’ food trading sector has advanced considerably over the past decade, although there is still room for further development. At ZK Foods, we invested early in ERP, WMS, TMS, and CRM systems to enhance operational efficiency, improve visibility and support data-driven decision making. At the same time, clients are increasingly adopting digital tools and B2B platforms, accelerating communication and execution. This progress is important but it is not sufficient,” Marios Kolokasides, The CEO of ZK Foods (Member of Zorbas Group) says following his win at the CBN Young Dragon Awards for his contribution to the food and beverage sector.

In an interview with GOLD magazine, he notes the rapid evolving of technology and urges more companies to embrace digitalisation. He believes that firms must focus on integrating artificial intelligence across supply chain, finances and logistics, which will in return improve customer experience.

Kolokasides finally reflects on his win at this year’s CBN Young Dragon Awards, sharing advice with other upcoming young professionals.

You have navigated major challenges over the past five years. How hard it is to take strategic decisions when so many critical variables are largely outside your control?

The COVID-19 period was one of the most challenging phases of my career, particularly as it coincided with the early years of my leadership. We faced significant losses due to the bankruptcy of key customers, while the HORECA sector – our main channel – was largely inactive. Under such circumstances, I focus on what we can control. Challenges are catalysts for growth and innovation. We used the crisis as an opportunity to transform by reshaping our business model, diversifying customer channels, restructuring our portfolio, strengthening strategic partnerships and optimising logistics through Cycold. These actions enabled us to emerge stronger, with a more resilient and clearly defined strategy.

How digitally advanced is Cyprus’ food trading sector and how critical is it for the industry to invest in automation and modern systems to remain competitive?

Digital transformation in Cyprus’ food trading sector has advanced considerably over the past decade, although there is still room for further development. At ZK Foods, we invested early in ERP, WMS, TMS, and CRM systems to enhance operational efficiency, improve visibility and support data-driven decision making. At the same time, clients are increasingly adopting digital tools and B2B platforms, accelerating communication and execution. This progress is important but it is not sufficient. As technology evolves rapidly, companies must move beyond basic digitalisation and focus on integrating artificial intelligence across the supply chain, logistics, finance and the customer experience. To remain competitive, the sector must accelerate this transition and fully leverage emerging technologies.

How does winning a CBN Young Dragon Award reshape the expectations you place on yourself, going forward?

Being named a Young Dragon is a truly meaningful distinction and I am deeply humbled by this recognition. This category is especially important to us because it reflects the core of ZK Foods’ activity and our role within the wider hospitality and food service ecosystem. To be recognised by both the committee of experienced professionals and the public makes this award even more significant. This distinction represents not only an individual journey but the collective effort of the exceptional team at ZK Foods. Every achievement is built on shared vision, commitment and consistent collaboration. The award raises the bar and strengthens my sense of responsibility for what comes next. Although we have achieved strong growth over the past five years, I believe that we are still at the beginning. For us, the sky is the limit and we remain focused on sustainable growth and continuous improvement. The support of the Zorbas family gives us even greater confidence for the future. Their knowledge, expertise and continuous strategic guidance allow us to think bigger, expand internationally and continue creating long-term value.

Looking back on your journey so far, what is the biggest lesson you have learned and what advice would you offer to ambitious young professionals?

The most important lessons I have learned are simple but powerful. First, dedication is essential. You must truly love what you do and commit to it fully, especially during challenging periods. Consistency and resilience are fundamental to building something sustainable. Second, surround yourself with the right people. The Yiallourou family gave me the opportunity to enter entrepreneurship and supported me from the very beginning. A defining milestone was when the Zorbas family entered our business. Their trust, values and continuous support helped us grow, develop new brands and expand internationally. Third, mentorship plays an important role, even informally, through a strong network of professionals who challenge and inspire continuous improvement. Finally, markets evolve rapidly and success requires constant learning, critical thinking and the commitment to always become better.
