Modern approaches to prevention in cardiovascular health

Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide, despite significant advances in medical science. However, contemporary scientific knowledge demonstrates that key risk factors can be identified early and effectively managed. Prevention and the reduction of exposure to harmful factors are now fundamental pillars of public health, offering substantial opportunities to reduce the burden on healthcare systems and improve citizens’ quality of life.

The conference will take place on Tuesday, 7 April 2026, at the Hilton Nicosia, bringing together senior executives, policymakers, technocrats, and experts, setting new standards of excellence in the field of harm reduction.

In this context, the Harm Reduction Conference 2026 will host Dr. Ignatios Ikonomidis, MD, PhD, FESC, EACVI, HFA, Professor of Cardiology and Director of Echocardiography and the Laboratory of Preventive Cardiology at the 2nd Cardiology Department of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. In his presentation titled Modern Approaches to Prevention and Harm Reduction in Cardiovascular Health, he will analyse contemporary scientific approaches that contribute to the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and the reduction of associated risks.

As he is expected to highlight, cardiovascular disease does not occur suddenly but develops gradually over many years. Factors such as hypertension, elevated cholesterol, smoking, metabolic disorders, and physical inactivity are measurable and modifiable. When exposure to these factors is reduced early and maintained at low levels, the onset of cardiovascular diseases can be significantly delayed or even prevented.

Particular emphasis will also be placed on the role of smoking as a key cardiovascular risk factor. Smoking directly damages blood vessels, accelerates vascular aging, and significantly increases the likelihood of heart attack and stroke. Smoking cessation remains the most effective way to reduce this risk; however, in cases where immediate cessation is not feasible, harm reduction approaches can help limit exposure to harmful substances, supporting a more realistic prevention strategy.

Extensive Clinical and Research Experience

Dr. Ignatios Ikonomidis is Professor of Cardiology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and Director of the Echocardiography Unit and the Laboratory of Preventive Cardiology at the 2nd Cardiology Department. With extensive clinical and research experience in cardiovascular prevention and advanced cardiac imaging, he actively contributes to the international scientific community through significant research publications and participation in international scientific organisations.

A Leading Platform for Knowledge Exchange

As organisations are called upon to respond to multidimensional risks and evolving needs, harm reduction emerges as one of the most effective, realistic, and applicable strategies for limiting negative consequences.

Recent developments in science, technology, and regulatory frameworks demonstrate that the smart utilisation of innovation can lead to safer choices for individuals, society, and the environment.

From mobility solutions that reduce environmental impact to technologically advanced products and services that minimise everyday risks, progress is paving the way toward more sustainable and healthier practices.

Following last year’s successful event, IMH presents the Harm Reduction Conference 2026, returning for a second consecutive year as a leading platform for knowledge exchange, awareness, and the promotion of innovative approaches.

The conference is addressed to senior executives of leading companies and organisations in Cyprus, including:

  • Board Members
  • Chief Executive Officers and senior leadership of organisations and associations
  • Marketing Directors, HR Directors, and Heads of ESG strategy
