Nicosia ranks second best destination in Europe for 2026 according to the city's Tourism Board

Nicosia has been ranked second best destination in Europe for 2026 by European Best Destinations, receiving 109,214 votes from international travelers worldwide, the Nicosia Tourism Board announced.

According to a press release, the distinction emerged from a global vote involving more than 1.3 million participants invited to select the European destination they most wish to visit in 2026.

In addition, Nicosia has been recognised as Europe’s Best Cultural Destination 2026, confirming its growing influence as one of the continent’s most dynamic and evolving capitals.

"More than a ranking, this recognition reflects a broader structural movement: the re-emergence of Nicosia in the international spotlight, reclaiming its rightful place as a leading Mediterranean destination," the Board says.

A city where Venetian walls, Gothic architecture and centuries-old institutions coexist with contemporary galleries, design studios and an increasingly refined gastronomic scene under the "Taste Nicosia" identity, Nicosia is redefining itself as far more than a cultural city-break, says the Nicosia Tourism Board.

"It is establishing itself as a year-round destination — a vibrant hub of international events, sporting initiatives, culinary experiences, boutique shopping, and wellness offerings. Like other major European capitals that have successfully balanced heritage and modernity, Nicosia demonstrates how preserving historical identity can coexist with bold reinvention," it continues.

According to the Board, this transformation is driven by a new generation of hoteliers, restaurateurs, cultural institutions, creative entrepreneurs and public stakeholders who are collectively shaping a renewed narrative for the city — one rooted in authenticity yet confidently forward-looking.

"In an era where travel inspiration is increasingly influenced by digital ecosystems and artificial intelligence platforms, recognition by European Best Destinations generates substantial international exposure and measurable strategic impact. It enhances visibility across key markets, strengthens media positioning, reinforces investor confidence, and consolidates Nicosia’s presence within high-value tourism segments," the press release reads.

This distinction does not mark an endpoint, but a milestone within a long-term strategy: positioning Nicosia as a sunlit Mediterranean capital of culture, events, sport, gastronomy and lifestyle — a destination that honours its roots while confidently embracing its future, the Board continues.

"With this achievement, Nicosia enters 2026 not simply as a highly ranked city, but as one of Europe’s most compelling and complete urban destinations," the press release concludes.
