Cyprus has recorded a rate of 56.8% in the match between education and employment for young people aged 15-34 with a medium or high level of education, according to data published by Eurostat.
Specifically, in 2024, 56.8% of young people in the country reported a very high or high alignment between their field of study and the requirements of their current or most recent main job.
At the European Union level, as Eurostat notes, the corresponding share stood at 56.4% for young people aged 15-34 with a medium or high level of education. More precisely, 46.1% of those with a medium level of education and 68.1% of those with a high level of education reported a very high or high match.
Eurostat clarifies that the indicator measures, based on self-assessment, the degree of alignment between a person’s field of education and the requirements of their current or most recent main job, on a scale including the categories: “very high,” “high,” “moderate,” “low,” or “no match.”
Regarding fields of study, Eurostat reports that the highest alignment at EU level was recorded in the health and social care sector, where 80.6% of young people with a high level of education worked in jobs closely related to their studies. This was followed by information and communication technologies (77.0%) and education (73.6%).
By contrast, according to the Agency, 52.2% of young people with a high level of education who graduated in arts and humanities reported a low or no match. High shares of low alignment were also recorded in social sciences, journalism and information (59.1%), and in services (59.3%).
At the national level, Eurostat notes that the highest shares of very high or high alignment were recorded in Latvia (76.5%), Lithuania (76.1%), and Germany (75.2%). Conversely, the lowest shares were observed in Italy (41.6%), Slovakia (46.2%), and Denmark (47.1%), where young people face greater difficulties finding jobs closely related to their field of study.
