GOLD New Issue: In Cyprus We Trust

In the new issue of GOLD, coming out on Sunday, 15 February, we explore the growing business relationship between the US and Cyprus (click here).

With a GDP that stands to reach $31.8 trillion in 2026, the US will continue to remain attractive for Cyprus, which is hoping to get even a small piece of the huge American pie. The US and Cyprus have had a relationship since the island’s independence 1960, with business relations expanding ever since. Some major names – among them tech powerhouse Microsoft, software company Oracle and energy giant ExxonMobil – have had presence here for decades, showing their trust in Nicosia’s economic importance.

However, given recent geopolitical shifts and a consistent drive to push the Cypriot economy towards a greater partnership with the United States, government policies and visits by Cypriot officials to the US have signalled to Washington that Cyprus is ready to attract US tech and energy companies, as well as investment firms looking to have a base or greater role in a strategic corner of the world.

What the future will hold for this new era in the Cyprus-US business relationship remains to be seen. But for the first time in years, Cyprus’ outreach appears coordinated, targeted and closely tied to its wider economic transformation agenda, suggesting that Washington is no longer just a political ally but a key economic audience that Nicosia is determined to win over. In this cover story, we explore the growing business relationship between the US and Cyprus, speaking to organisations like the American Chamber of Commerce in Cyprus (AmCham Cyprus), its EU counterpart (AmCham EU), and Invest Cyprus, each of which plays its own active role in building and maintaining economic relations between the countries. In addition, eight leaders of major American companies that have established a base in Cyprus speak about the importance of expanding cooperation between Nicosia and Washington, sharing their experience of the island’s business scene and offering advice to others thinking of following their example.
