With a dynamic premiere at Sundance and a double standing ovation, the film 'Hold Onto Me' by Myrsini Aristidou has launched its festival journey, becoming the first Cypriot, Greek-language production to premiere at the prestigious festival.
The world premiere took place on Monday, 26 January at the Library Theater, which was sold out, while all subsequent scheduled screenings of the film in Park City, Utah have also been sold out. As noted in an announcement after the premiere, "the first official screening concluded in an atmosphere of intense emotion and was met with a standing ovation from the audience, receiving a warm reception from viewers, industry professionals, and film critics alike."
'Hold Onto Me' marks the first Cypriot, Greek-language production to premiere at Sundance, representing a historic moment for Cypriot cinema. The screening was followed by a Q&A session with the director and the film’s lead actors, during which the audience expressed strong interest in the film’s themes and its Cypriot identity.
Early reviews have been particularly positive. As one review notes, “Aristidou’s debut is a profound exercise in observation, with a rough, sun-drenched honesty that reveals a resilient beauty amid the wreckage of a fractured father-daughter relationship.”
At the same time, international sales company Cercamon acquired the film’s worldwide distribution rights. The company’s CEO, Sébastien Chesneau, stated: “The Cercamon team recognized the strength of the film and Myrsini Aristidou’s directorial vision from the very first moment. This is a debut that combines authenticity with universal emotion, with the potential to resonate with audiences all around the world.”
It is also noted that the film is one of ten titles selected from around the world to compete in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition, the final results will be announced on January 30.
