The average total employment in the government increased by 0.6% in 2025 compared to 2024, according to CySTAT, due to a 6.1% increase in fixed-term employees, despite a 4.8% decrease in permanent employees.
According to a statement, employment in the government in December 2025 reached 55,301 people, recording an increase of 53 people (0.1%) compared to the same month in 2024.
Employment in the Public Service and Security Forces decreased by 0.9% and 0.4% respectively, while in the Education Service it increased by 1.8%.
According to CySTAT, the largest increase (0.4%) in total government employment compared to December 2024 is observed in the category of permanent employees, and the largest decrease (-0.7%) was observed in hourly-paid workers.
Regarding employee categories by Service, the largest percentage increase in employment is recorded in employees with contracts of indefinite duration in the Educational Service (23.5%), while the largest percentage decrease in employment is observed for employees with contracts of definite duration in the Security Forces (-74%).
CySTAT finally notes that the significant decrease observed in the number of employees with contracts of definite duration in the Security Forces (-74%) is mainly attributed to the completion and non-renewal of specific definite duration contracts in July 2025.
